YEREVAN, ARMENIA – On Tuesday, Alen Simonyan, the President of Armenia’s National Assembly confirmed that Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party will block an opposition resolution that sought to guarantee that Armenia would not agree to giving Azerbaijan control over Artsakh. By doing so, Pashinan’s party left the door open to Armenia’s government agreeing to Artsakh’s status as part of Azerbaijan.
Armenia’s parliamentary opposition forces, the “Hayastan” and “Pativ Unem” alliances drafted the parliamentary resolution last week as they continued daily protests demanding Pashinyan’s resignation. They will try to push it through the parliament at an emergency session scheduled for Friday. Simonyan confirmed that his party will boycott the session.
Responding to why Pashinyan’s party would not support such a measure that would preclude Armenia agreeing to hand away Artsakh, Ishkhan Saghatelyan, the representative of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Supreme Council and parliament vice-president stated that “they are afraid of doing that because they have given Aliyev promises. They are afraid because one and a half years after the war they have increased only the number of police and interior troops, while the army has been downsized.”
