A meeting between the leaders of Armenia and Turkey is expected in New York, according to Turkish media.
The meeting between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is likely to take place at “Turkey’s House,” a skyscraper in Manhattan, as both leaders attend the 79th UN General Assembly. Erdogan has already commented on Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, noting that both countries have a key opportunity for lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
The Armenian government has not yet confirmed the meeting.
In the meantime, European Union ambassadors recently visited the Armenian-Turkish border to observe reconstruction work at a checkpoint, where Armenia has spent one billion drams for modernization. Though Armenia is prepared to open the border, Turkey has yet to take action. The Armenian envoy, Ruben Rubinyan, stated that Armenia is ready, but is waiting for Turkey’s political will.
Despite reaffirming their commitment to open the border without preconditions, Turkish officials have tied the process to resolving Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, where no agreement has yet been reached.
