General Seyran Saroyan Has Died at the Age of 54

Armenian General, former Member of Parliament Seyran (Sedrak) Saroyan has died at the age of 54. 

Seyran Saroyan was born on September 3, 1967 in Ejmiatsin (Vagharshapat), Soviet Armenia. In 1993 he graduated from the highest academic courses of the Republic of Armenia’s Ministry of Defense, and in 2006 from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, majoring in “State Military Security”. 

Between 1985 and 1987, Saroyan served in the Soviet army. He was an active participant in the Artsakh Liberation Movement. The detachment under his command, later named the “Artsuik-10” battalion, fought in the battle for the liberation of Karvachar, Kashatagh, and Kovsakan. From 1993 to 2007, Saroyan was the commander of a regiment, then a brigade, and finally the 2nd and then 4th army corps of the RA Armed Forces.

Saroyan was promoted to the rank of major general in 2000.

He was a recipient of various military awards and medals:

  • 1996 “Combat Cross” Medal
  • 1997 “Marshal Baghramian” Medal
  • 2002 “Drastamat Kanayan” Medal
  • 2003, 2004 “Impeccable Service” First and Second Degree Medals
  • 2006 First Class Medals “For Service to the Motherland”

On May 12, 2007, Saroyan was elected a deputy of the 5th convocation of the National Assembly (Parliament) from constituency No. 19 by the majority electoral system. In 2018, he resigned from the the Republican Party and politics.
