Since mid-January, Fresno Ararat Armenian Cemetery has fallen victim to a series of arson attacks, leaving devastation in its wake. Six incidents in total have resulted in the destruction of 19 ancient trees, with the latest attack occurring Friday night, where eight trees along the picturesque main entrance were set ablaze.
Despite the swift response from Fresno Police and Fire departments, no arrests have been made, leaving the community deeply unsettled. The targeted cemetery holds significant cultural and historical importance as the only Armenian cemetery outside Armenia and the Middle East. Among other notables, Armenian Avenger Soghomon Tehlirian’s grave is situated in the cemetary.
Sheri Manning-Cartwright, Executive Director/Administrator of Ararat Armenian Cemetery and Masis Ararat Armenian Cemetery, expressed profound distress, emphasizing the community’s commitment to honoring the memory of those laid to rest there.
The fires have ravaged the oldest section of the cemetery, founded in 1885, clearly marked by gates and an archway as Armenian property. The timing of these attacks, coinciding with the approaching Armenian Genocide Commemoration Day on April 24th, raises concerns of a potential hate crime.
The estimated cost to remove and replace the trees amounts to approximately $25,000, a financial burden compounded by uncertainty regarding insurance coverage. In light of these challenges, the cemetery’s board of directors appeals to the public for assistance.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents is urged to contact Fresno Police at 559-621-7000. The community stands united against such senseless acts of destruction, determined to uphold the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery.
