The Archives and Publications Director of the Armenian Relief Society, Tatul Sonents-Papazian, retired in January 2024 after three decades of dedicated service.
He has made significant contributions to the Armenian community, culture, and art, particularly through his involvement with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and the Armenian Relief Society.
Born in Cairo, Egypt, Unger Tatul pursued a university degree before starting a career as a graphic designer for various newspapers. In 1951, he joined the US Foreign Service, serving as the art and publications director for the US Information Agency. After six years, in 1957, he moved to the United States and became the executive director at the University Press of Cambridge. From 1972 to 1978, he collaborated with the Harvard University Publications Office to establish his publishing company. Following this venture, he worked as a freelancer in publishing, editing, and printing. It is worth mentioning that Unger Tatul utilized his excellent painting and graphic design skills and contributed to creating posters and logos for many Armenian organizations.
Sonents-Papazian is passionate about translation, and his work shows his dedication. He has translated numerous books, poems, and articles. His most recent project is the English translation of Antranig Dzarougian’s “Letter to Yerevan,” which he completed in collaboration with Roupen Janbazian. He also translated Daniel Varoujan’s “Song of the Bread,” edited by Viken Tufenkjian. In addition to his translation work, he has made significant contributions to the activities of the Hamazkayin Theatre over many years.
His outstanding contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Mesrob Mashtots Medal from the Cilicia Catholicos, The Armenian National Committee of America-Eastern Region Vahan Cardashian Award, and the E. Agnouni Award from the ARS Eastern Region.
Sonents-Papazian was the former director of the archives of the ARF and the first Republic of Armenia and the editor of the Armenian Review academic publication. His involvement with the ARS started 30 years ago, during which time he held several key positions, including executive director of the Central office and director of archives and publications. For many years, he served as the driving force and editor of the ARS “Hai Sird” periodical. His unwavering dedication, knowledge, and experience have been invaluable to the organization and the Armenian community.
Upon his retirement, the ARS extends its heartfelt gratitude to Tatul Sonents-Papazian for his exceptional service and contributions. We wish him a long, healthy, and fulfilling life, recognizing him as a dedicated Armenian who has selflessly served the nation and its causes.
