The Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. State Department is “deeply disturbed” by new reports of violence against Armenian PoWs during the September 12-14 fighting.
“Full and impartial investigation must hold those responsible to account,” thr Bureau said in a statement on Wednesday, October 2.
“The October 4 return by Baku of 17 Armenian PoWs was significant and a positive step forward.”
The Armenian Ministry of Defense said earlier that they were investigating a new video showing the torture of Armenian prisoners of war by Azerbaijanis.
The footage has been spreading on Telegram channels since October 11. The faces of the Azerbaijani servicemen are not visible in the video, most likely to prevent identification.
In footage published online on October 2, Azerbaijani troops are seen murdering several unarmed Armenian prisoners of war.
The latest round of fighting between the two countries began in the wee hours of September 13, when the Azerbaijani military attacked Armenian posts and shelled Armenian settlements both on the border and deep behind the frontline. More than 200 people are dead or missing as a result, the Security Council of Armenia said several days later.
