Burbank, CA – On Tuesday, April 11, 2023, the City of Burbank issued a Proclamation designating April 24, 2023 as Burbank’s Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day of 1915-1923. The proclamation was adopted during the city’s council meeting and was read aloud by Mayor Konstantine Anthony.
The Proclamation was presented to ANCA Burbank and was accepted by Mr. Sarkis Simonian, Chairman of ANCA Burbank.
In his remarks, Mr. Simonian noted that “for us Armenians, the Genocide continues today as evidenced by the blockade in Artsakh. The tactics may have changed but the aim is the same, which is the annihilation of the Armenian People.” He also iterated the importance of being vigilant and combating hateful rhetoric whenever it rears its ugly head.
Alongside representatives of both the Armenian and Jewish communities, Chairman Simonian and Rabbi Sobel read a joint statement on behalf of the Burbank Human Relations Council (BHRC) condemning the recent acts of hatred and bigotry in our sister City of Glendale (and previously in Beverly Hills) aimed at pining the Armenian and Jewish communities against each other.
Mayor Anthony also announced that the city will light Burbank City Hall walls with the colors of the Armenian Flag from April 22nd-April 24th.
Field representative from Senator Portantino’s office, Jack Artan, who was also present, also said a few words on behalf of the senator during the city hall meeting.
ANCA Burbank expresses its appreciation to the City of Burbank, and the entire council for their continued commitment to the Armenian Genocide cause and their courage and commitment to advancing social and economic justice in general, especially in these difficult times.
The Armenian National Committee of America–Burbank advances the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the area’s Armenian community and promotes its increased civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.
