A group of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) citizens on Friday, December 23 marched to the checkpoint of Russian peacekeeping contingent near Shushi, not far from which a group of Azerbaijanis posing as environmentalists have blocked the Lachin corridor.
The Armenians of Artsakh expressed their displeasure to one of the commanders of the peacekeepers and reminded them that under the trilateral statement from November 9, the Russian side has to ensure safe traffic through the corridor.
“You have to understand. With that trilateral statement, we gave Kelbajar and Lachin regions without a fight, so that Russia would provide a safe corridor for us,” said Tigran Petrosyan, the co-founder of Artsakh Tomorrow party.
The Russian commander, who came to meet the citizens, said that negotiations were underway with the Azerbaijani side: “There’s no point in going there now, you’ll only aggravate the situation.”
For almost two weeks now, the key road has been blocked by Azerbaijanis who claim to be environmentalists. Azerbaijan had also deprived the people of Karabakh of gas supplies.
